POSITANO
Once a sleepy little fishing village and the secret of painters and writers, its "fatal gift of beauty" has been discovered. However, its charms is still evident; square, white Moorish-style houses set in luxurious gardens, descend in steep steps down the mountain side to the bay where, off-sore lay the Galli Islands, legendary Home of Sirens.

AMALFI
When you arrive in Amalfi, the panorama is wonderful, white houses clung on the rocks are opposed to the big Saint Andrew Church, located in the middle of the town. Amalfi is full of steps, there is a long way up with 57 steps to get on the Atrium of the Cattedrale di S.Andrea which overhangs the main square. On the right side of the Cathedral, we find the church tower (XII century) while above we see the chiostro del Paradiso and the Chiesa del Crocifisso. Here the visitor can discover the historical religious past of the Amalfi Church.

RAVELLO
Ravello sits like a natural balcony overlooking the Gulf of Salerno, from where you can look down on Amalfi, Minori and Maiori. The Cathedral San Pantaleone dates back to the 11th century and features an impressive marble pulpit with six lions carved at its base. There is a small Museum in the crypt containing religious artefacts and some marbles from Villa Rufolo. Villa Rufolo includes a series of buildings in the Arab-Sicilian style. Here Boccaccio placed the merry company of the Decameron and Wagner found inspiration and wrote the third act of Parsifal. The villa was built in the 13th century for the wealthy Rufolos and housed several popes, as well as Charles I of Anjou. From the terraces there is a magnificent view over the bay. The villa's gardens are the setting for the Festival Musicale di Ravello each June.
Villa Cimbrone was built at the beginning of last century in a medieval style. It includes a building with two towers, a courtyard and an open vaulted terrace-room called Cripta. At the end of a straight avenue through the lush gardens there is the Belvedere Cimbrone, the most advanced point of the ridge on which Ravello lies, from here you can enjoy one of the most spectacular panorama in Italy.

PAESTUM
With its impressive and solemn churches and its splendidly preserved walls, Paestum is one of the most famous and important archaeological sites in Italy. The ruins of Paestum include the walls, four majestic and well-preserved Greek temples, other religious buildings, the amphitheatre and the Via Sacra, in addition to other minor remains.

VIETRI SUL MARE
The first town that you find coming from Salerno, is Vietri sul Mare. The town is built on a little promonty and on the seaside where we find an impressive saracin tower. Historicaly, Vietri was the old town of "Marcina", built by the Etrurian. Later the Roman conquered it. Vietri Sul Mare since XV century produced ceramics; its trade was especially with Sicily and Calabria. The decoration of Vietri ceramic, has the typical color of the coast. In Raito, just above Vietri, you can visit the museum of ceramic, where you can admire pieces from the XV century.

POMPEI
This ancient city at the foot of Vesuvius was quite prosperous in Roman times. It was destroyed in 79 A.C., following the famous volcanic eruption which covered it with a layer of pumice and ash. The first archaeological explorations took place towards the mid-18th century, and excavations soon began in earnest, but not until 1860 were they conducted in an orderly, systematic fashion. It is thought that, to date, about three-fifths of the ancient town has been excavated. Pompei is one of the most important archaeological sites in the world, because it provides a complete picture of the topography and life of a Roman town.

HERCULANEUM
When Vesuvius erupted on 24 August 79 A.D. it engulfed the two flourishing Roman towns of Pompei and Herculaneum, as well as the many rich villas in the area. Since the mid 18th century these have been progressively uncovered and made accessible to the public. The vast expanse of the commercial town of Pompei contrasts with the restricted but better preserved remains of the holiday resort of Herculaneum, while the superb wall paintings of the Villa Oplontis at Torre Annunziata give a vivid impression of the opulent life-style of the wealthier citizens of the early Roman Empire. The excavations are still today uncompleted.

SORRENTO
A splendid and famous holiday resort, Sorrento stands on a terrace rising steeply above the sea. Because of its enchanting position and mild climate, sheltered by the surrounding hills, Sorrento has been a favorite resort since Romans times, and it became an elite tourist resort from the eighteenth century, its hotels welcoming such luminaries as Ibsen, Wagner and Nietzche.

NAPLES
Naples has been a metropolis since ancient times. It has a fascinating history throughout the ages and has handed down a rich cultural and artistic heritage. Located on the bay dominated by the Vesuvius, it is a showcase for some of the most famous archaeological treasures in the world. Founded in the 7th and the 6th centuries B.C. as a Greek colony, it flourished during the Roman Empire as a port and a holiday centre for patrician families. Later it was also under the Bizantium, Norman, Swabian, Aragonese, Spaniard and Bourbon dominations until 1860 date of Unification of Italy.
